Physiotherapy treatment for Learning Disability
What to expect in the Initial appointment?
The initial appointment will last approximately 60–70 minutes and will involve an assessment of the client’s:
- Physical condition and movement.
- Strength, balance, posture, and mobility.
- Individual needs and daily activities.
- Personal goals and priorities.
The assessment will help us understand how the client manages everyday activities and identify areas where physiotherapy may help.
A person-centred approach will be used throughout, taking into account the client’s communication needs, understanding, sensory preferences, and abilities.
Where appropriate, parents, carers, or caregivers may be involved to provide information about the client’s needs, routines, and progress.
Assessment Approach: Depending on the client’s needs, the assessment may include:
- Checking posture, muscle strength, flexibility, and joint movement.
- Assessing balance, coordination, and mobility.
- Looking at everyday activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and changing position.
- Identifying difficulties with movement, muscle tightness, weakness, or comfort.
For clients with learning disabilities, the assessment will be adapted to suit their individual needs. This may include using simple instructions, demonstrations, familiar activities, or play to encourage understanding and participation. Extra time will be allowed where needed.
Goal Setting and Treatment Planning
Following the assessment, individual goals will be agreed with the client and, where appropriate, their family or carers.
Goals may include:
- Maintaining or improving movement and mobility.
- Improving balance and coordination.
- Managing muscle tightness and improving comfort.
- Supporting safe positioning.
- Encouraging participation in everyday activities.
A suitable treatment plan will then be discussed and explained, outlining how physiotherapy can help achieve these goals.
Advice and guidance will also be provided to parents, carers, or caregivers where appropriate, to help support the client’s movement, comfort, and daily activities.
Overall aim: To understand the client’s individual needs and develop a practical, supportive physiotherapy plan that can be adapted as their needs change.
Follow up appointments:
Subsequent appointments will provide individualised neurological physiotherapy based on the client’s needs, abilities, and goals.
Sessions will usually last 50–60 minutes and may include:
- Massage and hands-on treatment: To help reduce muscle tightness, maintain joint movement, and improve comfort.
- Stretching and joint movement: To support flexibility and prevent stiffness.
- Movement exercises: To encourage movement and improve physical abilities.
- Balance and coordination: To support posture, stability, and everyday activities.
- Functional activities: Practising skills such as sitting, standing, walking, and changing position, where appropriate.
- Sensory activities: To encourage awareness and participation where needed.
Physiotherapy will be adapted to suit each client’s communication needs, abilities, and interests.
This may include:
- Using simple instructions and demonstrations.
- Including games, play, and enjoyable activities.
- Working at a pace that suits the client.
- Encouraging participation in a positive and supportive way.
- Advice for Parents and Carers
Where appropriate, advice and guidance will be provided to parents, carers, and caregivers to help support the client between sessions.
This may include:
- Advice on safe movement and positioning.
- Guidance on exercises and physical activities.
- Tips for including movement in everyday routines.
- Strategies to support comfort, safety, and independence.
- Positioning and Wheelchair Support
Where needed, positioning in bed or in a wheelchair can also be assessed to help improve:
- Comfort and posture.
- Body alignment and support.
- Stability and positioning.
- Suitability of seating and wheelchair equipment.
If further wheelchair or seating support is required, help with a referral to Wheelchair Services can be provided where appropriate.
Overall Aim
Treatment will be reviewed and adapted as needed to support the client’s progress, maintain or improve movement, promote independence, and improve comfort and quality of life.
